One & Other was a public art project by Antony Gormley, in which 2,400 members of the public occupied the usually vacant fourth plinth inTrafalgar Square, London, for an hour each for 100 days. The project began at 9am on Monday 6 July 2009, and ran until 14 October. The first person to officially occupy the plinth was Rachel Wardell from Lincolnshire.^[1] A documentary art book by Gormley, entitled One and Other, was published in the UK by Jonathan Cape on 14 October 2010. The Wellcome Trust has posted online at its website its series of oral-history interviews of the 2400 plinthers.

The project was opened by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. Minutes before the official launch Stuart Holmes, an anti-smoking protester, managed to clamber onto the plinth and displayed a banner calling for a ban on tobacco. Gormley urged him to do the "gentlemanly thing" and give up his place to the first official "plinther", Rachel Wardell. He did so and descended in the cherry picker used to carry participants to and from the plinth.^[2]^[3]

Members of the public could apply for an hour on the plinth via the project's website. Gormley himself applied but didn't get a place.^[4]Reviewing the event afterwards, the Guardian's top ten "plinthers"^[5] were:

On 14 July at 8.00pm, poet R. N. Taber read a selection of his poems, while photographer Alex Boyd collaborated with Scottish Makar (Poet Laureate) Edwin Morgan for his time on the plinth.^[8] On 12 August at 1am, a naked plinther was asked to cover up by the police.^[9]

Streamed live online by SkyArts, the exhibit quickly developed a cadre of regular Twitter followers who provided a running commentary of events on the plinth.

Existe uma película inédita de Star Wars.
George Lucas só pode ter tido um choque cerebral que fundiu os seus neurônios. Só assim para explicar que em 1978, depois da estréia do filme lhe ocorresse rodar para a televisão uma delirante aventura natalina "Star Wars: Holiday Special". O filme começa com Chewacka viajando a seu planeta natal para passar as festas natalinas em família, esta primeira parte do filme é completamente falada em Wockie, porteriormente aparecem o resto dos personagens e a película se converte em... um musical! Era tão ruim, mas tão ruim, que nenhuma televisão quis comprar os direitos de transmissão.

Fidel Castro tentou triunfar em Hollywood.
Treze anos antes de converter-se no líder de Cuba, Castro iniciou uma breve carreira cinematográfica como galã latino na qual teve tempo de interpretar pequenos papéis em três musicais: Escola de sereias, Bathing beauty e holiday in México.

Stalin também adorava os musicais.
Por isso promoveu a rodagem destes no cinema soviético e inclusive compôs uma canção para um deles "o chiqueiro e o pastor", a letra dizia: "Uma canção alegra o coração que alguma voz arrebatou. Todos os povos grandes e pequenos adoram esta melodia; enquanto as grandes cidades cantam a canção."

A película mais longa da história.
Tem um titulo que explica tudo: "Tratamento contra a insônia", dura 87 horas, isto é, mais de 3 dias e meio, o filme consistia numa única seqüência na qual se via o poeta Lee Groban lendo uma composição de 3.400 paginas. Só foi projetada na íntegra duas vezes e ninguém conseguiu ver o filme todo.

Sigmund Freud só não foi o roteirista mais bem pago da história porque não quis.
Em 1933 um produtor lhe ofereceu um cheque em branco para que lhe contasse as psicopatias de seus pacientes, com a idéia de que nelas podiam ter escondidas muitas boas películas, Freud recusou por que lhe pareceu pouco ético.

A atriz mais assassinada.
A francesa Paula Maxa, especializada em papéis de vítima no cinema mudo foi assassinada em toda sua carreira um total de 358 vezes, muitas delas de forma horrível. Em alguns filmes chegou a fazer mais de um papel com o intuito de ser assassinada várias vezes.

Bruce Lee foi o único ator com clones.
A estrela das artes marciais conseguiu protagonizar 4 películas depois de sua prematura morte. Para exprimir a lenda ao máximo as duas grandes produtoras de Hong Kong rodaram várias dezenas de películas protagonizadas pelos clones do ator aos que batizaram com nomes como Bruce Le, Bruce Li, Bruce Liu... alguns lembravam o famoso lutador, mas outros não pareciam nem um pouquinho, tinha um que nem era chinês, inclusive era loiro.

Inchon: A única película produzida por mandato divino.
Um dia o reverendo Sun Myang Moon fundador da conhecida popularmente como a seita Moon, sofreu um ataque de choro e tristeza que só se deteve ao entrar num cinema de Seul. Ele interpretou o fato como um sinal divino e investiu 104 milhões de dólares na produção de uma película sobre a guerra da Coréia. O filme se converteu no segundo maior fiasco comercial da história do cinema, só arrecadou 2 milhões de dólares.

A película com mais carecas.
Metropolis onde Fritz Lang recrutou 15.000 alopécicos para a cena do sacrifício ao deus Moloch, o deus sem escrúpulos do capitalismo.

Alguns gangsters foram grandes cinéfilos.
Al Capone foi ao cinema ver Scarface - A Vergonha de uma Nação (1932 - Howard Hawks) várias vezes, filme de gangsters baseado em sua vida. E John Dillinger foi crivado de balas pelo FBI quando saia de uma sala de cinema que projetava uma película muito apropriada para "o Inimigo publico numero um" 1934.

O único filme rodado uma única vez.
Seu titulo era "O homem perseguido por um ovni", a maior parte do filme era composta por partes de outras películas, de forma que nem o homem nem o ovni eram os mesmos em quase nenhuma cena, a história além de disparatada, tinha pontos peculiares, os fajutos ovnis ou o fato de que os extraterrestres quisessem abduzir um Simca Chambord. Ao final da exibição o proprio diretor queimou a fita.

Bascos no Oeste.
"O desfiladeiro da Morte" é um bang-bang espanhol mais alucinante do que se possa imaginar. É protagonizado por uma caravana de bascos que querem chegar a Califórnia. Durante todo o vão vestidos com chapelões, dançam flamenco e no momento principal do filme enfrentam os peles vermelhas a pedradas.

Vaqueiros Turcos.
Nem tadas as películas de bang-bang são estadunidenses, na verdade a maioria são italianas, e inclusive espanholas, mas mais além do espaguete Western existe também o Kebab Western. Nos 60 os turcos filmaram duas dezenas de películas deste tipo. A primeira Kanunsuz Kahraman, que foi exportado com o nome de Ringo "Kid".

Mudanças de Sexo.
Kenji Mizoguchi, mestre do cinema japonês começou sua carreira como Oyama, nome que recebem os homens especializados em interpretar papéis de mulher. Curiosamente no japão existe um gênero chamado Takarazuka no que só atuam mulheres e no que, em alguns casos, também interpretam papéis masculinos.

Gorilas jogadores.
Na primeira película de Tarzan os gorilas eram na realidade uma equipe de futebol americano disfarçado para a ocasião, o Santa Mônica Football Clube, para ser exato.

O filme com mais palavrões.
"Scarface, a força do poder" (1983 - Brian De Palma), remake de filme homônimo de 1932 realizado por Howard Hughes, é o filme com mais palavras malsonantes, um total de 203, dando uma média de um palavrão a cada 29 segundos. "Fuck you, son of a bitch", na boca de Tony "Montana" é música.

Casais Impossíveis.
O filme Alien vs Predator 2 traz à lembrança um gênero meio esquecido, o Crossover, que consiste em juntar dois mitos numa mesma história. Assim então o crossover já teve casais dos mais disparatados, tais como Drácula vs Frankenstein, Drácula vs Billy the Kid e inclusive Bruce Lee vs Emmanuelle um dispautério onde não aparecia nem o Bruce Lee e nem a Sylvia Kristel e que misturava artes marciais com pornochanchada.

A primeira película sonora.
O potencial da nova tecnologia foi mal aproveitada no primeiro filme, a parte falada do filme "Jazz Singer" constava de apenas 3 cenas que não passavam de 10 minutos, naquele tempo os produtores acreditavam que ninguém poderia agüentar um filme com mais de uma hora de diálogo.

Cinema que cheira.
Em 1959 estreiou em Los Angeles "Scent Mistery" um filme de intriga no qual a chave do mistério estava na colônia do assassino, por isso foi utilizado uma nova tecnologia em sua projeção, o Arorama, que consistia numa máquina que aspergia toda a sala com uma fina camada de pó que simulavam os cheiros do filme. O problema é que já à metade da exibição tinha tanto pó no ar que ao final ninguém sabia que cena do filme estava cheirando.

Apareceram novas formas de atrair o público, uma das mais polêmicas foi o Sensurround, estreado no filme "Terremoto" que fazia vibrar as poltronas do cinema simulando um tremor. Pior ainda foi o Tingler, que soltava descargas elétricas no traseiro do espectador durante a projeção de 13 "Fantasmas".

O som no mundo artesanal.
Quando se deu o salto para o cinema sonoro, poucos locais do mundo estavam equipados para sua reprodução e o som da película corria por conta de "comentaristas" como nas partidos de futebol, comentaristas que ademais não seguiam o script, se dedicavam a fazer comentários graciosos ou rimas sobre alguns aspectos do filme. Alucinante.

Cinema Negro.
Na Hollywood dos anos 70 nasceu a moda da Blaxploitations, películas protagonizadas inteiramente por atores de raça negra. Teve um drácula negro, uma lolita negra e inclusive uma versão do Mago de Oz na qual estreava uma rapazinho ainda de cor: Michael Jackson.

A película mais cara.
É a versão russa de Guerra e Paz dirigida por Sergei Bondarchuck em 1968. Calculando o custo da inflacão, o filme precisou de um investimento de 560 milhões de euros.

O ator que mais papéis interpretou num mesmo filme.
Não, não é Eddy Murphy, foi o britânico Rolf Leslie, que encarnou 27 personagens diferentes em "Sisty years of a Queen". Seguem-lhe de muito longe o espanhol Paul Naschy com seus doze papéis no "Aullido do diabo" e Alec Guinness que fez 8 papéis, um deles feminino em "Oito sentenças de morte".

Os mormons.
Os mormons produziram o filme "Plano nove desde o espaço exterior", do diretor Ed Wood, com a condicão de que a toda a equipe do filme, inclusive atores, fossem batizados.

Começou sua carreira sob um pseudônimo dirigindo "Nudies", filmes eróticos. O mais famoso é "O bordel da montanha" onde Drácula, Frankenstein e o Homem lobo exercem seus poderes num prostíbulo.

A História do Projeto:

muitos dados informados numa reportagem de Christopher Jones para o jornal The Boston Globe e o livro "Paper Dreams" de John Canemaker.

Guardado numa caixa em algum lugar da Califórnia está um velho negativo com cerca de 15 segundos em cores de um filme único na história da arte do século XX. O filme mostra duas figuras "bizarras" com cabeças humanóides (similares a cabeças normais) deformadas pelo estilo "persuasivo e loucamente triunfante" de Salvado Dalí. As cabeças estão sobre cascas de tartarugas. Quando se juntam, o espaço entre elas forma o desenho de um sino, que se transforma numa bailarina. No último momento, a cabeça da bailarina abruptamente se transforma numa bola de beisebol... que desaparece numa desolada paisagem montanhosa.

Parte dessa curta cena pode ser apreciada durante o filme "Fantasia 2000", quando Bette Midler mostra idéias não produzidos pelos animadores - antes do segmento "The Steadfast Tin Soldier".

O pedaço de película com mais de 50 anos é tudo o que restou de um projeto animado esquecido chamado "Destino", uma curiosa colaboração entre o artista surrealista Salvador Dalí e Walt Disney que nunca foi completada. As razões para "Destino" nunca ter sido finalizado ficaram ocultas por mais de cinco décadas, até que o jornalista Christopher Jones encontrou materiais do desenho após a morte de seu pai, Tom Jones, em 1992. Num escuro sótão no Vale Loire, onde Tom Jones morava, seus filhos encontraram entre seus papéis uma coleção de notas, negativos nunca vistos antes, e velhas fotografias que ele fez quando era agente publicitário de Disney. Christopher Jones relembra que uma vez seu pai o levou a noite para visitar o escritório de Walt Disney onde havia um quadro - o retrato de Júpiter - uma pintura de Dalí feita para "Destino". Christopher diz que vendo todo o material encontrado no sótão, ele nota que a versão completa de "Destino" seria uma sensação sem medidas, uma revolução cinematográfica usando técnicas a frente de seu tempo.

Afim de deixar claro alguns mistérios do projeto, o jornalista Christopher Jones começou a telefonar para todos que pudessem ter alguma informação. Buscando entre antigos empregados da Disney e amigos de Dalí - alguns com mais de 90 anos, a pesquisa correu lentamente... até que o telefone tocou. Era John Hench, ligando da Califórnia. Nos anos 90, Hench era vice-presidente sênior da Walt Disney Imagineer, e na época de "Destino" ele já era um artista de alto-nível, trabalhndo em filmes como "Fantasia" e "Dumbo".

Em "Destino", Hench foi chamado para ensinar a Salvador Dalí a técnica de animação Disney. Dalí, na época, descreveu Hench como uma "silhueta espectral", que sabia melhor que Dalí ou Disney os segredos do filme.

Excitado pela idéia que alguém finalmente se interessou em "Destino", Hench decidiu revelar os mistérios do filme e descrever detalhes de uma das parcerias mais estranhas já criadas na Hollywood da era de ouro. Salvador Dalí disse que seu destino era "salvar pinturas do niilismo da arte moderna". E o homem escolhido para levar suas pinturas surrealistas para as telas de cinema não era outro senão o criador de Mickey Mouse - Walt Disney.

De acordo com Hench, as finanças da Disney eram precárias em 1946. O estúdio havia perdido uma linha de crédito do Bank of America quando "Fantasia" provou ser um desastre em 1940, fazendo com que as dívidas se acentuassem. Para salvar o estúdio, Disney foi obrigado a recorrer ao bilionário Howard Hughes. Mesmo com o sucesso de "Dumbo" um ano depois, um animado brilhante de 64 minutos sobre o bebê elefante, o estúdio acabou perdendo o mercado europeu quando a Segunda Guerra Mundial foi iniciada. O estúdio ainda foi tomado pelo exército nos anos de guerra, e Disney acabou forçado a produzir cartoons para treinar as tropas, além de criar designs cômicos para as insígnias da aeronáutica. Muito foram os serviços prestados por Disney que nunca foram pagos, mas o estúdio estava se recuperando financeiramente.

Walt decidiu que filmes “pacote” - curtas-metragens diferentes "empacotados" num longa-metragem - pareciam ser um risco menor de fracasso. Disney, sempre alerta a oportunidades, poderia dividir o filme e realizar as seqüências separadamente e recuperar o investimento, porque muitos curtas (naquela época) precediam muitos filmes nos cinemas.

Pouco tempo depois, Disney decidiu convidar grandes nomes entre os artistas e autores para o estúdio. "A bilheteria seguirá a qualidade", Disney dizia aos nervosos homens do dinheiro e seu czar financeiro - o irmão Roy O. Disney.

Por muito tempo Disney evitou festas em Hollywood, preferindo exercitar seu hobbie favorito: "brincar" com a réplica de uma locomotiva a vapor que circulava o terreno do estúdio. Mas numa das poucas festas em que comparaceu, Walt foi apresentado ao casal Salvador e Gala Dalí por Jack Warner em 1945 (cuja festa estava sendo realizada na casa deste magnata do cinema).
Os Dalí ficaram sentados com os Warners, enqüanto o pintor surrealista pintava os seus retratos. Nesse ponto, Walt e Salvador iniciaram uma longa amizade peculiar.

Nessa época, Disney já era fascinado com técnicas modernas de arte, e já havia as experimentado em 1939. Críticos elogiaram a seqüência abstrata de "Fantasia" como remanescente de Kandinsky e Miró. Hench supervisionou o segmento usando imagens abstratas pela primeira vez em um filme Disney, Com isso, o estúdio já tinha alguma experiência com novos tipos de técnicas, o que seria essencial para a futura parceria. Walt e Salvador Dalí rapidamente fizeram um acordo, com Dalí concordando em trabalhar num projeto para o estúdio. Quando os dois se encontraram, Dalí havia sido convidado para trabalhar em seu primeiro filme em Hollywood, a seqüência do sonho em "Spellbond" de Alfred Hitchcock, cujo produtor David O. Selznick havia o convencido a criar. Dalí moveu seu cavalete e suas tintas para os estúdios Disney em 1946.

Por algum tempo, o projeto permaneceu secreto para grande parte do estúdio. O trabalho do pintor catalão Salvador Dalí era preparar um seqüência de seis minutos combinando animação com dançarinos ao vivo e efeitos especiais para um filme no mesmo formato de "Fantasia". Disney originalmente planejou usar "Destino", uma balada romântica do compositor mexicano Armando Dominguez, em um curta-musical apresentando a cantora e dançarina Sul-Americana, Dora Luz. Mas a palavra "DESTINO" acabou levando Dalí ao entusiasmo, o que o fez criar desenhos imaginativos, selvagens para ilustrar suas emoções.

O enrêdo do filme variava de acordo com a descrição de cada artista. Dalí dizia ser "Uma exposição mágica do problema da vida no labirinto do tempo". Já Walt Disney dizia "Somente uma simples estória sobre uma jovem garota em busca do verdadeiro amor".

Dalí rapidamente adotou a rotina do estúdio. Por dois meses, ele chegou pontualmente todos os dias às 9:30 da manhã e trabalhava em seu cavalete. O artista normalmente almoçava no restaurante executivo do estúdio - "Coral Room" - com Disney e Hench, ou com os empregados do estúdio conversando com sua mistura de línguas quase indecifrável: uma mistura de francês, espanhol, catalão e um "mal" inglês. Sua esposa e musa, Gala, freqüentemente o acompanhava ao estúdio para inspirar, interpretar, ou apenas ficar de olho em seu marido. Quando ela estava lá, Dalí era mais produtivo, criando desenhos para serem utilizados junto a trilha musical pré-gravada.

Trabalhando num ateliê no terceiro andar do antigo "Animation Building" dos Estúdios Disney, Dalí e Hench estavam criando completamente uma nova técnica de animação., o equivalente cinematográfico a "paranoid critique" de Dalí.
Este método, que teria pouca conexão com o título, é enormemente inspirado pelo trabalho de Freud no subconsciênte e na inserção de imagens ocultas duplas no trabalho de arte. Dalí apresentaria uma imagem que o espectador reconheceria como sendo uma coisa.... e lentamente força o espectador a visualizar formas estranhas na imagem, que podem eventualmente revelar algo novo.

John Hench cita: "Todos nós sabemos que D.W. Griffith inventou tudo no cinema, mas Dalí elaborou um método que ninguém havia visto antes. Imagine uma cena com dois esquiadores na neve. Nada muito especial... somente um par de esquiadores. De repente o panorama estaciona em uma montanha nevada. Nada mostra que a cena mudou, com excecção dos esquiadores que estão fora da tomada. De repente a câmera regride e somente agora vemos a imagem completa. As montanhas da cena tratam-se dos seios nus de uma mulher nua! A substituição foi sendo apresentada desde o início da seqüência, mas os olhos insistem que é neve o que está sendo observado (mesmo reconhecendo as formas femininas), até que finalmente nós admitimos de que é uma mulher e nada mais."

Nada havia sido criado até então: combinar surrealismo e animação. Nos anos 40, filmes como forma de arte não estavam na agenda dos estúdios. Muitos filmes eram produzidos com simples estórias e eventualmente se tornavam clássicos como "Casablanca", mas muitos eram imemoráveis. Mas Disney queria que a animação deixasse de ser coisa de criança e se tornasse de vez uma forma de arte. É claro que, com o cancelamento de "Destino", a chance de ganhar o reconhecimento seria perdida para sempre. "Destino" poderia modificar o que conhecia-se até então como animação.

Um dia em 1946 quando John Hench dirigiu-se a Monterey, Califórnia, num estúdio próximo ao velho Del Monte Lodge Hotel, ele encontrou Salvador Dalí ditando o roteiro para Gala, que estava escrendo o manuscrito. Ficando mais e mais entusiasmado sobre esta forma de arte-em-movimento, Dalí disse a Hench: "Animação realça a arte; suas possibilidades são infinitas".

Quando Dalí roteirizou "Destino" em sua forma livre de pensamento para se encaixar perfeitamente na canção de Dominguez, um cenário enigmático apareceu representando as idéias do artista sobre o amor e o que o tempo faz a ele. O roteiro de Gala-Salvador descreviam como os apaixonados em "Destino" seriam filmados com dançarinos de ballet ao vivo (em live-action) ao lado dos cenários 'Daliescos' repletos de estátuas, telefones, conchas e moedas. Eles estão 'lutando' contra o tempo, na forma de um gigantesco relógio solar que emerge da da grande face de pedra de Júpiter, que determina o destino de todos os romances humanos.

Walt Disney ficou de olho no trabalho em progresso, e sendo um admirador do talendo de Dalí, ficou entusiasmado com o novo visual que estava sendo trazido para a animação. Assim, uma vez os storyboards finalizados, Dalí e Hench prepararam o famoso "pencil-test" de 18 segundos, onde pode-se ver os esboços em movimento.

Salvador havia voltado para Monterey, relembra Hench, assim uma vez filmado o teste, ele levou o filme para mostrar ao pintor. Hench foi a um pequeno cinema e convenceu o gerente a exibir os 18 segundos após um filme B (na verdade um Western) e depois que a platéia tivesse se retirado. As luzes se apagaram e Dalí viu sua arte em movimento... e acabou amando o resultado. No fim da curta exibição veio o projecionista e praticamente gritou "O que foi isso?" Dalí e Hench se entreolharam... ambos sabiam que isso era um momento único na arte.

Walt Disney decidiu comemorar de seu próprio jeito. Num domingo, ele convidou Dalí e Hench para visitar a sua casa em Holmby Hills, onde uma locomotica (chamada Carolwood Pacific) em miniatura circulava o terreno. O trem tinha tamanho suficiente para que várias pessoas pudessem embarcar (na verdade cada um sentava sobre um vagão). Walt Disney nunca pretendeu entender todo o simbolismo do artista porque achava que isso era parte do misticismo de Dalí, mas não resistiu em convidar um pioneiro em formas experimentais de animação - o excêntrico animador Ward Kimball (o criador do Grilo Falante) para pilotar o trem tendo como passageiro Salvador Dalí. Ela tem um par de chifres na testa, mas mantém o hábito de dar um parecer final sobre qualquer foto sua. Se a imagem não a agrada, a artista francesa Orlan não hesita em pedir que o autor aperte o “delete”, reclamando que o ângulo não ficou bom ou que aquela não era a luz ideal. No Brasil pela primeira vez, a criadora do “manifesto da arte carnal” falou ao público em uma palestra no Museu de Arte Contemporânea, em São Paulo, na tarde desta segunda-feira (25). Ela estará presente na próxima sexta (29) em evento no Oi Futuro, no Rio de Janeiro.

Protagonista do primeiro “extreme makeover” da história da arte, Orlan chocou o mundo nos anos 90 ao realizar a performance “A reencarnação da Santa Orlan”, uma série em que ela se submeteu a nove cirurgias plásticas que foram transmitidas via satélite para diversos lugares, entre eles as principais galerias de arte da Europa. Ao longo desse processo, a francesa nascida em Saint-Étienne em 1947 transformava seu rosto radicalmente, recebendo, além de chifres – realçados calculadamente com purpurina no dia de sua visita à capital paulista – mas também implantes no queixo, nas bochechas e ao redor dos olhos.

Durante a operação, apesar da anestesia, Orlan mantinha-se consciente. Em algumas performances, crânios, tridentes, frutas e legumes iam sendo misturados ao cenário. Em outras, ela lia textos ou então fazia desenhos com os dedos usando o seu próprio sangue. “Eu queria falar sobre o quanto se maltrata o corpo das mulheres. A religião propõe um corpo culpado, que deve sofrer. O meu trato era: nada de dor, nem antes, nem depois.”

“A arte carnal não procura purificação, mas busca transformar o corpo em língua”, fala Orlan, que diz amar o rim, o pâncreas e se excitar com a linha do fêmur. Um dos resultados de tantas operações é a instalação “Corpo colocado em quarentena”, composto por 40 auto-retratos do primeiro ao 40º dia após a intervenção cirúrgica. “As fotos mostram os inchaços e todas as cores pelas quais passamos – azul, amarelo, vermelho. Muitos cirurgiões não quiseram me operar, não queriam mostrar o que acontecia no meio do processo, só o antes e o depois”, conta.

Orlan também é autora da performance “O beijo da artista”, de 1977, em que ela se posicionava atrás de um tórax nu feito de madeira e distribuía beijos em troca de cinco francos durante uma exposição em Paris. “Era algo que falava não só de sexo, mas também de afeto. Houve uma ruptura com a minha família e com os vizinhos”, conta. “Foi um período tragicômico da minha vida.”

Hoje, mais de quatro décadas depois de sua primeira performance, Orlan diz que nunca teve uma crise de identidade. “Não estou nem aí com as imagens que produzi de mim mesma, porque não fui eu que escolhi o ponto de partida. Não escolhi meu nome, nem a cor da minha pele. Nós somos cidadãos do mundo, receptores de estímulos que vêm dos lugares mais diferentes, da televisão, da internet. Não quero fazer cirurgia todos os dias, prefiro beber champanhe com os meus amigos. Mas seria divertido se pudesse mudar o meu rosto diariamente.”

7 dicas para aplicar e conservar cílios postiços

Depois de quatro dias com belezas “nada com iluminador”, surpresa nos dois primeiros backstages desse sábado (14.01), último dia da temporada carioca: cílios postiços. No desfile deGiulia Borges, eles aparecem só na parte de baixo, garantindo o efeito boneca. Na Nica Kessler, só em cima, avançando só um pouco no canto externo para abrir o olhar. Já que o tema do dia são eles, algumas dicas de experts no assunto:

. Esqueça as colas que vêm na embalagem dos cílios. A melhor é a Duo Eyelash Adhesive (veja abaixo). Segundo Cris Biato, ela é potente então basta uma pouca quantidade, o que evita a meleca.

. Não aplique diretamente a cola nos cílios. “Coloque um pouco na mão e passe os cílios nela”, ensina Robert Estevão. “Aí, espere ela secar por alguns segundos antes de encaixar perto dos cílios.”

. Um pouco de pó é ótimo para a cola aderir melhor. “Se tiver só base no local, fica mais difícil de grudar”, ensina Rogério Pontes, da equipe de Robert Estevão.

. Na hora de colocar, a dica de Cris Biato é “fazer olho de peixe morto”, ao invés de deixar só um aberto. “Com os olhos um pouquinho abertos você consegue enxergar melhor exatamente onde está colocando”

. Sempre ter um cotonete a mão, para ir limpando o excesso de cola à medida que aplica os cílios, é o truque de Luiz Bicalho, da equipe de Robert Estevão.

. Para um efeito menos fake, a dica de Cris Biato é “desfiar” os postiços. “Pegue uma tesoura para cílios (pode ser de unha também, desde que tenha a ponta bem fina) e vá fazendo cortes delicados nos cílios na vertical, para tirar um pouco do volume.”

. Comprou aqueles cílios incríveis e quer usar mais de uma vez? Então é bom conservá-los bem. Depois de usar, retire a cola com os dedos e use um pouco de álcool para higienizar. Para que eles durem, jamais aplique rímel neles.

    Anyone who attempts body painting quickly discovers the lack of useful information and dearth of practical materials to accomplish successful body paintings. This situation has improved in recent years. It is becoming easier to find good paints to work with.
        Most traditional makeup techniques are incredibly messy and time consuming. It's not unusual to hear of a full body painting taking 10 to 12 hours. Eventually I learned of some better techniques that get the job done with a minimum of mess and time.
Markers: Cheap, Safe, but slow.
Airbrush Make Up: Excellence, Speed and Safety -- For a price.
MagicColor and Mehron Face Paints, moderate price, good quality, safe.
Textile Acrylics: Very Practical, inexpensive, good looking, and probably safe.
Liquid Latex: Fascinating material with many possibilities.

Markers
    Crayola, along with other companies, makes special markers for kids. These are completely safe, as they are formulated under the assumption that kids will be marking themselves, and moms will need to wash it off.   These actually work well at making a translucent effect, similar to tattooing. Once it dries, it stays on till washed off. The biggest drawback is the size of the point. Even the bold markers take an excessive amount of time if a lot of body coverage is needed. I've been told that the human body averages 1.8 square meters of skin. That's a lot to cover with markers.    I have seen wide tip Crayola markers. These could make a stripe a third of an inch wide (8 mm). This is more useful for bodypainting.Also I have seen some markers that are labeled as non-toxic, with tips 12 mm wide. But I have only seen these in Red and Black.
As for utility in Bodypainting, these markers have okay staying power. Primary advantage is that they can't peel off as paints can, and also won't pull or wrinkle when the skin stretches. They wash off very easy, but also will smear if they get to moist from water or sweat and are rubbed.
    Sakura makes some interesting 1" wide tip markers. These are watercolor, non-toxic markers. They stay on the skin fairly well until washed off. The most interesting colors are a metallic silver and a gold. These look good, and might be very useful for creating stripes and large areas metallic, but probably not practical for total coverage.

Airbrush Make Up
    This is probably the best, for safety, flexibility, and speed. Although more expensive than the airbrush acrylics mentioned below, this is a better way to go as airbrush textile acrylics, tend to crack and peel at high flexion points. If you are working for a commercial client, doing a photo shoot, then these are what you want to use.     A long time manufacturer is Kryolan. High quality makeup from germany.
    Dinair is another popular brand of Airbrush Makeup. They specialize in it, and also make standard skin colors Their focus seems to be more traditional glamour makeup, using airbrush technique.

     Mehron  has announced a of airbrush color. I've not had great success with Mehron in the past. The price is good, but I find it flakes and powders off easily when dry.
    You may also want to experiment with Kryolan's  Brandel color sprays in small cans. Unlike other hair colors, these lay down a solid opaque layer, just like real spray paint. It dries quickly to the touch and is fairly difficult to rub off. But in soap and water it dissolves quickly. It appears to be traditional hair spray loaded up with pigment. It has the same obnoxious fumes as old fashioned air sprays. I really like their gold and silver sprays, because it is possible to lay down a solid shiny layer. Black is incredibly messy though. Over spray is a real problem because of the fine aerosol mist these produce. Use a face mask! Seems to run US$6 to US$7 for a small can. It requires at least 5 cans for total body coverage. You can find them at good theatrical makeup supply stores. Here's one online source I found.

MagicColor and Mehron Face/Body Paints
    MagicColor is from Ben Nye, a Hollywood makeup company. These are opaque, but apply thin with a brush, and dry quick. (The main ingredient is alcohol.) They work well with airbrush. 4 ozs. can do whole body coverage. Price is around US$10 for a 4 oz bottle. Most primary colors are available, along with glitter metallic. Warnings are on the label against using red, pink or orange in eye areas. These are good all around makeup grade paints, not cost prohibitive, and with fairly good staying power. The red stains a little on skin, but cleans off easy. It does stay tacky for awhile, so you may want to apply setting powder.    Mehron's  line of Liquid Makeup is a little cheaper, and available in larger pint sizes for about US$13. So far I've only used the yellow, which seems to go on thin, and the red. It doesn't seem as flexible as the MagicColor. But I need to try more colors.

Airbrush Textile Acrylics    These are a great balance between low cost and utility. I learned about them from a model, who had used them before. I was nervous about using something that wasn't specifically formulated for application on skin. Yet she said she had used them with no ill effects and they are marked as non-toxic. They are actually designed for airbrushing on Fabrics.   They dry quickly and don't rub off easy. Because they are made for textiles their flexibility is superior to other paints. Yet they still wash off easily in soap and water. They also work well when applied by regular bristle brush.
The two brands I've used are Createx and Jurex(photo). Both work well and run about $5 for a 4 oz bottle. Larger bottles are available, but usually only black and white in most retail outlets. Createx has an iridescent line of colors that come out quite nice, with a shiny look, as opposed to a matte flat finish. The Jurex colors seem to work better than the Createx when using a bristle brush. They are available at any good art store that stocks airbrush supplies.
    I use a Pasche airbrush for fine work and a larger production airbrush for large areas. The large sprayer I bought at a hardware store for $20. It works well enough, but I found a smaller one at Sears called a touch up gun, which uses a pint size canister. These larger sprayers are the only way to go when you have to paint a lot of people or lay down an overall basecoat.
    The key to good airbrush make up is to lay down the thinnest opaque coat you can. Thicker or multiple coats peel and flake more readily. Thin your paint, the concentration in the bottle is usually too thick and will get used up too soon. There are good books at the art stores on air brush techniques for obtaining different effects.

AGPC Makeup
I have discovered an airbrush makeup that is safe on skin and that comes off with soap and water...yet has good staying power. You just set it with a talc powder and use a damp sponge afterwards to remove the powder. It's called Airbrush Grade Prosthetic Cosmetic or AGPC.It's from Michael Davy Film & TV Make Up , in Orlando FL. The only drawback is its expense. Even a four oz bottle is $35. But if you are painting for a long event, or other profesional job or commercial film or video shoot, this is the best. And prices drop if you order large containers. Many colors are available. I was particularly impressed with the white. When sprayed on, the AGPC2 (A more opaque version than the standard AGPC) is opaque with one coat.
The color selection is large, not as large as Createx though, with it's cool iridescent and pearlescent colors that look slick and shiny after drying. But you may be able to get the same effect by mixing silver or gold makeup powders into the paint. They also have UltraViolet reactive Day Glo colors.
It's possible that this makeup could last one to two days, making it ideal for events such as Burning Man.  This stuff doesn't sweat or rinse off, both water and soap are required to remove it. So it's perfect for large events or parties.

Liquid Latex

    Liquid Latex has become quite popular in the last couple of years. It has been available as a make-up material for a long time, but now some companies are making it available in several colors, including black and clear, beyond the traditional flesh tone.
    Initially it has been promoted as a way of making instant latex clothing. But it has real potential as body paint. Once it sets, it is much less messy than any other paint. And the setting time is quite quick, ten minutes or so. It also cleans off well, if applied to shaved skin!
    I have been exploring the use of latex as a base for other materials and paints. Some very interesting effects, textures and colors may be achieved. For example, you can mix in metallic powder or sprinkles, such as in this costume seen at Key West in '96. Or you can create dimensional textures with beads or sand. A reptilian texture can be achieved this way, and is quite convincing! Or one can try embedding larger objects, or fabrics. I painted a model at Burning Man 97  with a single coat of latex, and it lasted into the next day! It was finally removed when it started to itch. It is actually easier to remove multiple coats than single coats. Multiple coats form a strong layer, which peels off easily. People usually use sponge brushes to apply it.
   The trouble with Sponge brushes is that they don't leave a perfect smooth surface. I've experimented with using airless sprayers, and thinning the latex slightly with water. This actually works very well. Latex loves to stick to itself so you have to remember to use either transparent makeup setting powder on it, and or latex polish, which the companies that sell the latex also sell. When sprayed this way it looks great, and stays on well if the skin is well cleaned of body oils before application. BUT-- this great looking thin coat is harder to remove quickly than the thicker brushed on coats, which peel off. If the latex is going to be worn for several hours that usually helps--by that time it just rubs off easily.
    Another advantage to latex is that it can serve as a protective barrier between the skin and paints or materials that are not as safe as make-up.

REMEMBER!

It is possible for someone to have a latex allergy! Test the individual model first before covering large areas!!
    I have had success creating very shiny metallic looks using latex and metallic powders. This differs slightly from the technique of mixing the powder into the latex. Instead, wait till the latex is almost set, but still tacky. Then gently brush on the powder.
    A company on the web that sells Liquid Latex in all colors, including UltraViolet is Deviant .
Deviant sells the ORIGINAL, tried-and-true quality-tested FANTASY LIQUID LATEX. As Jerry Pena describes it, "We have been quality tested and on the market for over 4 years.     All in all, Liquid Latex is tricky. It both requires and rewards experimentation.

Tempera

Tempera has long been popular as a body paint, because it is very cheap, and very safe. Unfortunately, it looks great wet, but as soon as it dries, it becomes powdery, and flakes off rapidly. Makes a terrible mess. Not Recommended.

Tip 1: Value Your Paints
Professional face paint and stage makeup can be expensive, particularly if you're painting a whole kids party's worth of faces. Don't leave them around where people can get hold of them and try them out for themselves. Try out different types of paint to see which you find the best for working with, such as paint in tubs or paint in stick form. (See also: Safety Tips for Face Painting)

Tip 2: Sponge Don't Brush
If you're wanting to cover a large area or put on a base color, use a sponge to apply the paint rather than a brush, it'll be quicker. Having a different sponge for different colors eliminates the necessity of washing out the sponge during a painting session (the same applies to brushes).

Tip 3: Be Patient and Think Thin
Let the first color dry before applying a second. If you don't, they'll mix and you'll probably have to wipe it off and start again. Also, rather than applying one thick layer of paint, which may crack, apply a thin layer, let it dry, then apply another.

Tip 4: Visualize the Finished Face
Know what you're going to paint before you start, don't make it up as you go along. Kids aren't known for their patience and won't be able to sit still why you ponder what to do next. Have a basic face design fixed in your mind; you can always add special touches to this once you're finished.

Tip 5: Special Effects
The paint you're using will work as a basic glue. To create bumpy noses or big eyebrows, soak a bit of cotton wool in the paint, place on face, cover with a piece of tissue, and paint. Puffed rice or wheat make ideal warts; simply cover with a bit of tissue and paint. For an extra-ghostly effect, apply a light dusting of flour once you've finished painting the face (be sure to get your subject to close their eyes tightly).

Tip 6: Use Stencils
If you're not confident painting freehand, or are short of time, why not use a face painting stencil? Stars, hearts, flowers will all stencil onto a cheek. Have stencils in a few sizes to hand, to allow for small and larger faces. (The free stencils collection has a variety to print and cut out, including a some small face painting stencils.)

Tip 7: Temporary Tattoos
Even faster than stencils are temporary tattoos . But some people's skin reacts badly to them and they take longer to remove. Glitter is also great for a quick, dramatic effect, but it gets everywhere and is very hard to get rid of! (Also check that the glitter is suitable, seeSafety Tips for Face Painting.)

Tip 8: Getting a Decision
If you've got a row of kids lined up to have their faces painted, ask the next kid in line what they'd like a few minutes before you've finished the face you're currently painting. This way they've a little time to try to decide and you don't lose painting time. You may suggest a few faces, to try to limit the choice to one you're confident painting. Consider creating a chart of designs for kids to choose from; it makes it much easier for the kids to make up their minds. Include simple things such as hearts or balloons, as many kids love these.

Tip 9: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who's the Most Beautiful of All?
Remember to take a mirror so the person who's face you've just painted can see the result. Also bring a high stool for kids to sit on; not having to bend over for so long will save you from back ache .

Tip 10: Stock Up on Tissues
You'll probably use more tissues or wipes than you think for wiping your hands, brushes, etc. Face painting can be messy, but it's fun! Baby wipes work fast and easy for 'mistakes'; you can also be assured they are safe to use on faces. (See also: How to Make Your Own Baby Wipes .)

The origin of the red and white barber pole is associated with the service of bloodletting and was historically a representation of bloody bandages wrapped around a pole. During medieval times, barbers performed surgery on customers, as well as tooth extractions. The original pole had a brass wash basin at the top (representing the vessel in which leeches were kept) and bottom (representing the basin that received the blood). The pole itself represents the staff that the patient gripped during the procedure to encourage blood flow.

Barbers, being medieval surgeons, would be present at the birth of a child, and were there to cut the umbilical cord—a red (artery) and blue (vein) on a pale colour umbilical cord was passed to the parents by the barber after the umbilical cord had been cut, and this blue/red/pale tube or pole became the Barber's pole, and the symbol of the pole represents a freshly cut umbilical cord.
Others opine that the red, white and blue format in the United States may be an homage to the colours of the flag.

In some parts of Asia, a red, white and blue barber pole is used as a symbol for a brothel. While prostitution is illegal in many parts of Asia, laws against it are often not enforced to the degree that all public solicitations for it are eliminated. The barber's pole is used as a euphemistic way of advertising a brothel, thus reducing the likelihood of police intervention.

In South Korea, barber's poles are used both for actual barbershops and for brothels. Brothels disguised as barbershops, referred to as 이발소 (ilbalso) or 이용실 (iyongsil), are more likely to use two poles next to each other, often spinning in opposite directions, though the use of a single pole for the same reason is also quite common. Actual barbershops, or 미용실 (miyongsil), are more likely to be hair salons; to avoid confusion, they will usually use a pole that shows a picture of a woman with flowing hair on it with the words hair salon written on the pole.

'Femme Fatale' is basically brilliant

So the recent history of Britney is a bit like this: recorded by a detached superstar at the height of some rather desperate lows, 'Blackout' quickly established itself as Britney's surprise masterpiece. Britney's next studio album was 'Circus'. Despite an amazing lead single 'Circus' sounded like the work of a popstar who was involved too much and too little at the same time, the victim of the sort of absent-minded hands-on approach that does more damage than good. 'Circus' was not the sort of album Britney Spears should have been making. It was, quite simply, not very good.

Well we had a listen to 'Femme Fatale' earlier. And here's the good news: 'Circus' feels like the work of a different artist. Here's the even better news: 'Femme Fatale' is another 'Blackout'. It's bursting with all that album's best bits - the slightly deranged production, the hard and dark spirit, the massive beats and the big tunes. And while it might be less of a surprise, as Britney is obviously pretty much back on top of things now, on first listen it might just be as much of a masterpiece. It's also a relief, because if 'Femme Fatale' had been a bit of a dog's dinner Britney-as-a-recording-artist would have been over.

To listen to 'Femme Fatale' we went over to Britney's label earlier tonight. The tracks only arrived in the UK at about 6pm, having been whizzed across the Atlantic via a spooky download link thing for internal use by Sony.

Here is what the album looks like on the Sony/RCA/Jive/whatever listening room computer thing.

For anyone amused by the apparently tokenistic dubstep breakdown in 'Hold It Against Me' - and the genre's trademark gloomwobble did rather seem to appear from nowhere then disappear back there just as abruptly - the big news from 'Femme Fatale' is that the foray into dubstep was more than just flirtation. There's dubstep in the DNA of this album. It's rarely as blunt as in 'Hold It Against Me' - there's no "ooh look at me I'm dubstep" showboating - and 'Till The World Ends' is a far better indication of the album's sound. With some exceptions, this is a heavy, dark and dangerous-sounding Britney album. It's a sound you'll hear in 'Inside Out', one of various songs leaked so far in clip form.

Even the will.i.am track 'Big Fat Bass', which sounded unbearable on first listen and seemed likely to reinforce will.i.am's reputation for turning in the worst tracks on otherwise amazing female-fronted pop albums - sounds great. We made notes on the songs one by one and had prepared the title 'Big Fat Pile Of Shit' in anticipation of this song starting but, halfway through, we'd crossed that out. It was surprisingly bearable partly because the second clip that emerged is a far better reflection of the track and partly because the rest of the album makes sense of it.

Lyrically - well, on the surface it's about what happens when you go out and what happens when you get back home, and beneath the surface it may well turn out to be that too. Pop right now doesn't really feel like it needs another set of songs about how great it is to a) go clubbing and/or b) have sex, and 'Femme Fatale' is preoccupied by both those topics, but it feels like Britney manages to sidestep the clublolz trap in the usually awful David Guetta sense or that sometimes awful Ke$ha sense. 'Femme Fatale' is an album with a perfectly defined sound and a clearly established personality. It's a club record in the same sense 'Blackout' was. It hangs together, it makes you feel like having a bit of a dance. It's playful. Gone are the slightly laboured, joyless moments of 'Circus'.

Some tracks are fast and some are slow but the nearest 'Femme Fatale'-era Britney gets to a ballad is closing track 'Criminal' (clip here) which has the flavour of 'American Life'-era Madonna - the 'Intervention' and 'Love Profusion' sort of sound. Flute (FLUTE) and guitar are high in the mix here but with hefty, whalloping beats. To these ears it's a darkly comic song about a guy who's basically awful ("he's a killer just for fun fun fun") and whose various character flaws are described all the way through the verses until the chorus arrives with "but... Mama I'm in love with a criminal, and this type of love isn't rational, it's physical; Mama please don't cry i will be alrgiht, all reason aside I just can't deny, I love that guy". Typing those lyrics out it looks a bit bad. But it sounds great. Really great. And when the middle eight swings around we're in classic - and by classic we mean the 'Oops!' album - Britney territory. Coming moments before the album's end it's a brilliantly timed glimpse of the traditional tuneage that put Britney at the top of pop over a decade ago. It doesn't sound much like anything else on 'Femme Fatale', but what's interesting is that it doesn't jar either. Her new album may be stuffed with fantastically aggressive robopop but, at the end of the day, Britney's still Britney.

We'll be able to discuss the album in more detail in coming days via a track by track sort of review but the key points from this overview are:

1. No crap songs.

And that, really, is all you need to know.

Usual disclaimers apply: we heard it all the way through once, it might sound less amazing on repeated listens but, equally, it might end up getting even better.

This hasn't been a very well written review so apols for that but finally, if you're still reading, we would like to say a thing. From what we've heard from this album (which is the whole thing, bar deluxe edition bonus tracks) and from what we've heard of the Lady Gaga album, they are entirely different bodies of work with entirely different influences and objectives from two entirely different artists at entirely different stages in their respective careers. Between them they offer a fantastic account of pop music in 2011 and should be viewed as complementary, not contradictory. There is room for both. Let's all just try to get along.

And on that note why not pre-order the album here or purchase 'Till The World Ends' here? "Because I am a fool" is the only possible answer.

They have been caricatured much in the media in the recent past, but a new documentary film looks sympathetically at the lives of working-class girls

THE SENSITIVE viewer could be forgiven for approaching Maya Derrington’s Pyjama Girls with caution. Over the last few years, the wearing of pyjamas outside the house has, for too many mainstream media outlets, become synonymous with social exclusion and loss of self-respect. To listen to the middle-class gripers on the radio, you’d think the donning of terry cotton nightwear is akin to horse theft or benefit fraud.

Happily, Maya’s fine documentary could not be less patronising. A young mother, originally from Bristol, Derrington admits that the initial spur was, indeed, a desire to document the current tendency for working-class girls to keep the jammies on all day. But, as work progressed, the picture developed into a genuinely touching, unusually warm study of two teenage Dublin girls from Ballyfermot. Lauren Dempsey and Tara Sallinger come across as noisy, troubled, smart and an absolute hoot. The film is resolutely on their side.

“I did begin with a fascination for this pyjama phenomenon,” Maya says. “But then, on another level, I was genuinely fascinated with life in the flats. I used to walk past Charlemont Street flats and wonder about the contrast between me walking to work in TV and these snippets of life that I would catch. I wanted to step over this boundary that frightened me. I wanted them to think of me as a person also.”

Initially researching in Basin Street Flats, near Dublin’s James Street, Maya and her team assembled a series of short interviews on the pyjama issue. A few citizens seemed interested, but drifted away as the project progressed. Then, after moving operations several kilometres to the west, Maya bumped into Lauren and Tara.

“We initially had completely different main subjects,” she says. “But we said we’d do a bit of filming with Tara and Lauren because they were interested in talking to us. What we encountered reminded me so much of my own teenage years. They have this love-hate thing. But they give each other so much support. That’s something we don’t give kids credit for.”

You get the sense that the film-makers have delicately tip-toed around certain sensitive issues. Lauren’s mother, who has had serious problems with drugs, is, for instance, an invisible, though unavoidable, presence in the film. We meet Lauren’s grandmother – another raucous character – but the generation in between is conspicuous by its absence.

“We could have had the mother in,” Maya says. “I did meet her and, yes, she was wearing pyjamas. But actually it was important to me that she was an invisible character. She represents a missing generation of parents – my generation, really – that is, the much-documented drug generation. It was important to me that she was notable by her absence.”

While watching a fly-on-the-wall documentary, the viewer is never quite sure to what extent the film-makers are interfering with the action. Surely, the very presence of a camera will cause the subject to behave differently. Extroverts will show off. Introverts will crawl even deeper into their protective shells. Derrington explains that the project took two years to complete. Nonetheless, I can’t imagine that Tara and Lauren ever entirely got over the novelty of being movie stars.

“That’s a good question. You never really know what influence you are having. It was usually just two of us with a small camera, and I do believe that people eventually forget about you. If you are quiet and unobtrusive, you’d be amazed by things that happen in front of you.” And, of course, a movie camera is now a household object. Following advances in mobile phone technology, most teenagers now have such an object in their hip pockets.

“That’s right. Young people today are so engaged with the technological side of the media that they are not even aware of a camera being there. Tara and Lauren are constantly documenting their own lives.” Spend some time with Derrington, and you understand how she gets people to open up. Amiable and unpretentious, she comes across as the sort of person who would be equally happy chatting to a duke or a doorman.

Her route from Bristol to Pyjama Girls is an unlikely one. Derrington studied English at Goldsmiths College in South London – alma mater of Damien Hirst and many of the other “Young British Artists” – but admits that, a scrappy student, she always felt herself “too cool for school”. Following graduation, she worked in the Soho offices of Bloomsbury Books. After two years, she decided, however, that a change of scene was in order. Why Dublin? “It really was completely random,” she says. “Me and my sister decided to do something different. I had been over to Dublin for a weekend recently and we flipped a coin to decide whether we’d move to Dublin or Belfast. This is simply how it worked out.” How bizarre. As things transpired, Derrington found her feet fairly rapidly. She took a job in Arthouse – that ill-defined, now defunct multimedia edifice in Temple Bar – and soon secured work on television documentaries. One of her earliest associates was Nicky Gogan, busy producer and director, and, in 2006, they joined forces with Paul Rowley to form the innovative company Still Films. Among the company’s earliest work was Rowley and Gogan’s Seaview, an eccentric study of the holiday resort turned asylum-seekers’ capmp in Mosney, Co Meath.

Pyjama Girls , playing commercially at the Irish Film Institute, looks set, however, to nudge Still Films’ profile that bit further into the spotlight. Made on a skimpy budget, the picture is never likely to compete with Toy Story 3 on the box-office chart, but it tells a strong, often sad, story that should appeal to a mainstream audience.

Mind you, some fusspots will worry about the whole concept of presenting images of working-class life to a largely bourgeois audience. Is there a danger of the film being seen as vehicle for inter-class tourism? “I suppose I wilfully wanted to draw people in who want to know why people wear pyjamas at all hours and to answer some of their outrage,” she muses. “Then my intention is that they will actually see these engaging characters and sympathise with them. But I really have been surprised by people who come out of the film and find it hard to be sympathetic.” Really? The picture seems so generous to its subjects and, for all their occasional bolshiness, Tara and Lauren come across as decent, engaging people.

“Well, that’s what I’d hoped. But some people felt intimidated. They had flashbacks to scary situations in buses. They identified them as the scary girls on the buses. It’s mainly men who react that way. Women identify with them much more easily. But I read one online review that was outraged the film wasn’t a voice-overed documentary about the pyjama thing. What can you do?” Such criticisms can probably be ignored. But Maya does acknowledge that some viewers may, quite reasonably, object to the film-makers’ decision to subtitle the entire picture. This is a very tricky issue.

We pour scorn on Americans for occasionally subtitling Irish, Scottish or Northern English pictures. Yet, whenPyjama Girls opens in the IFI, the mode of presentation will imply that many punters cannot understand a dialect spoken hundreds of yards from the cinema.

“Initially I was very against it,” she says with a wince. “The whole film works a lot better without it. But, basically, the feedback we were getting was that people plain couldn’t understand it. I could understand it. But even some people from Dublin couldn’t understand it. But obviously there is an offensive element to subtitling.” I get the sense that this issue caused a real brawl in the offices of Still Films.

“We only had the budget for one print and if we were to have any chance of getting it out there internationally, we basically had to subtitle it. We had a long debate, during which we all switched sides many times. It was so hard.” Showing the film to snooty men who have experienced (bless them) scary incidents on buses was one thing. Unveiling it before punters unfamiliar with the Dublin argot must also have been frightening. But I would imagine that the tensest screening was that for Lauren and Tara. The two girls do not appear to be backwards in coming forwards.

“That was the most nerve-wracking bit of the process,” she agrees.

“And I made sure to show it to them before anybody else. The things that troubled them weren’t the things that we thought would trouble them. It was: ‘No. I look awful in that shot.’ But I was impressed they were able to laugh with the film. At the end they were surprised and said ‘You know what? That’s actually quite a good film.’” Quite right too. They should put their quote on the poster.

WE knew X Factor's 2010 contestant Cher Lloyd was a fan of fake lashes - but we didn't know quite how much!

X Factor 2010's lead makeup artist Liz Martins has today revealed that mini-Cheryl Cole Cher Lloyd wear a whopping THREE pairs of Eylure fake eyelashes at one time!

She said: "Little miss Cher is a 'lady greedy lash' and loves to wear three, yes three, pairs of lashes at a time!

"I am trying to wean her on to just two at the moment and failing miserably. That girl is a 'lashaholic' and who am I not to indulge her?!"

And Cher is not the only X Factor wannabe who dons fake lashes for her live performances.

According to Liz, most of the girls have their own individual look that they like, with Liverpool lass Rebecca Ferguson loving the Sex and the City lashes from Eylure's range.

She said: "Rebecca is my modern day Sade and loves wearing the Sex and the City Lashes. We especially love the sexy Samantha ones as they look natural but have a lot of depth"

Chezza's wildcard Treyc gives Liz extra work on the night by favouring the look of individual lashes.

She told us: "TreyC loves the way the Individual Lashes look (and taking the time to relax in the makeup chair whilst I painstakingly apply them on!) as it gives her a full lash effect, looks more natural and we can switch up her beauty look from time-to-time."

And Simon Cowell's girl group Belle Amie are also fans of the fake flutterers - but the more wide-eyed look.

She added: "Belle Amie love that fluttery wide-eyed look so I have been tending to use the more glamorous styles in the Eylure Naturalites and new Naturalites Intense."

Louis Walsh's act Mary Byrne has also piled in on the action. But according to Liz, she likes a more natural look.

Going, going, GONE! Pigeon shuns chance of great escape after being scooped up by hungry pelican in London park

When a pigeon was gobbled up by a greedy pelican, it looked like instant game over for the little bird.

But when the predator unexpectedly opened up his huge beak again, the pigeon was given a chance to save himself and fly away.

Confusingly, however, the dopey bird instead chose to simply sit in the beak taking in the view - and missed his only opportunity to escape.

Not surprisingly, he was eaten up.

Photographer Paul Mansfield, 44, captured the remarkable scene while on a day trip to London with his family.

The pigeon had been pecking at crumbs in St James' Park, Westminster, when he was targeted by the pelican.

Mr Mansfield said: 'I noticed a small crowd gathered at the side of a lake that was 'oohing' and 'arghing'.

'On closer inspection I could see what all the fuss was about.

'On the grassy bank a pelican had managed to gobble up a pigeon.'

Going... The pigeon, which had been eating crumbs at St James' Park in London, is trapped, and with the crowd willing it to escape, the bird disappears from view

Mr Mansfield, from Brighton, East Sussex, added: 'The crowd was willing it to escape, with shouts of "Come on, you can do it!".'

'During one such moment the pigeon stood inside the peak, head peering out, with its body silhouetted on the pelican's pouch.

'There was another big gulp and you could see the pigeon slide further down the pouch.

'Then another and it was gone. There were gasps of disbelief from many in the crowd.'

Unbelievably the same pelican then gulped another bird nearby and the whole process started again.

Mr Mansfield said: 'I had seen enough and headed for more pleasant vistas along the South Bank.'

UK named ‘fourth most admired nation’

The UK has remained in fourth position in an annual league table of the world’s most admired countries.

The UK was beaten into fourth position by the US, who stayed top, with Germany second and France third in the 2010 Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index.

The annual list is compiled from the views of 20,000 adults from 20 countries across the world.

The UK also finished fourth in the ‘rich in historic buildings and monuments’ category and came fifth in the tourism section.

However, the UK finished a lowly 23rd (up one place) for being ‘rich in natural beauty’ and was 13th in ‘country that offered visitors a warm welcome’.

Speaking about the results, Sandie Dawe, Chief Executive of VisitBritain, said: "This result is a testament to the enduring appeal of Britain. It is clear that we are retaining our appeal in an increasingly competitive world market.

"With more governments recognising tourism as a driver of growth and ramping up their international marketing, it is striking that our ratings are remaining steady."

Figurinos em Hitchcock: Moda e Loiras Gélidas

Falar sobre roupas e suas possibilidades de expressão se confunde com a própria história de “As Carolinas”, a formação do modamanifesto.com e a motivação pessoal para estudar a moda seriamente de cada uma de nós.

Quando me formei em filosofia e comecei a escrever e pesquisar sobre moda, me vi inserida neste meio de roupas e aparências desde a infância. Meu trabalho de conclusão foi então: “Semiótica das Vestimentas”, onde estudei a teoria semiótica de Peirce e a possibilidade de aplicação às vestes, pelo viés da filosofia da arte. As roupas podem ser consideradas signos, pois segundo Peirce o signo deve representar algum objeto. Neste caso, o objeto que a roupa deve representar é o EU subjetivo de quem a veste, algo de sua identidade ou mesmo sua localização no tempo e espaço. Um bom exemplo seriam os uniformes, bastante representativos da função e atividade de um indivíduo.

Ao entrar em contato com os trabalhos de Carol Puccini e suas pesquisas sobre figurino, percebi que a relação semiótica de interpretar as vestes eram ainda mais claras e apaixonantes. A construção de um figurino deve fazer o caminho inverso: ao invés de lermos na indumentária a personalidade de um indivíduo, partimos de todas as características deste indivíduo expressas na literatura ou em roteiro para criar e interpretar o que simbolizará sua identidade e caracteres mais marcantes. A vestimenta de um personagem deve transmitir e representar a sua essência já estabelecida por um autor.

O cineasta Alfred Hitchcock era envolvido em todos os aspectos de sua produção, incluindo a direção de arte; o cuidado com o cenário, ambientação e preocupação com os figurinos, muitos destes, ele os escolhia pessoalmente. Por isso é claramente possível perceber seu estilo e assinatura na tela. Da roupa dos personagens aos objetos de uma residência, tudo inspira à aura de “assassinatos” e sempre diz algo mais do que parece à primeira vista.

Poderia dizer, correndo o risco de ser mal interpretada, que sua filmografia é uma permanente variação em torno de um único tema: a aparência. Pois a imagem, enquanto linguagem por excelência cinematográfica, foi explorada cuidadosamente em seus filmes para contar suas fascinantes histórias de crimes, medo e culpa. Mesmo em um de seus mais metafísicos filmes, como “Festim Diabólico”, em que o diálogo é primordial, a atmosfera da festa e o fato de sabermos que ali há um cadáver presente como mesa de jantar, nos afeta bastante. Em minha opinião, a cena do assassinato é esteticamente essencial e se contrapõe ao fato de o filme ser muito mais sobre a alma humana do que sobre um assassinato.

A complexidade na composição do figurino hitchcockiano está justamente em situar personagens, muitas vezes, com conflitos de identidade. Pois, se a roupa caracteriza determinado indivíduo, como fazer isso durante a perda ou confusão de identidade, tema recorrente em sua obra? Esses conflitos foram muito bem trabalhados em: “Spellbound- Quando Fala o Coração (1945)”, o personagem assume a personalidade do médico assassinado durante crise de amnésia; “Homem Errado (1956)” e “Intriga Internacional (1959)”, onde há a confusão de identidade com o culpado; “Um corpo que cai (1958)”, a personagem representando outra identidade; e “Rebecca – a Mulher Inesquecível (1940)”, em que a personagem é atormentada pela comparação com outra mulher tão diferente de seu universo.

Hitchcock sempre fez questão de manter em seus filmes o glamour do cinema que tanto encantava o público de sua época. As pessoas sonhavam com o cinema e seu esplendor, desejavam ver pessoas bonitas na tela e momentos perfeitos. Em seus filmes, a aparência e o estilo são sempre impecáveis, as roupas e o papel são perfeitas para os atores, assim como o ambiente. Muitos deles associam os personagens diretamente à moda e às vestes, tornando certos figurinos fundamentais para a história e uma lição sobre a evolução do personagem através da roupa.

Não há como falar de moda e figurino em Hitchcock, sem citar suas loiras gélidas. O diretor amava as loiras hollywoodianas e acreditava que elas estavam ligadas à tradição do cinema, era obcecado por essas loiras, que deveriam estar incrivelmente bem vestidas. “Pessoalmente, sou contra loiras que usam seu sexo pendurado no pescoço como uma grande jóia. Sempre pensei que era possível tentar descobrir no curso da sua história, se uma mulher é sex ou não” dizia o mestre. Suas personagens loiras eram levemente distantes, desejáveis e discretas, tudo ao mesmo tempo - nada de femme fatale explicitamente. Cito algumas de suas icônicas loiras: Joan Fontaine, Janet Leigh, Eva Marie Saint, Tippi Hedren, Kim Novak, Doris day e suas amadas Ingrid Bergman e Grace Kelly.

Destaco alguns filmes, cujos figurinos merecem atenção especial:

Em “Rebecca (1940)”, Joan Fontaine é uma personagem sem nome, só conhecida como Sra. De Winter. Seus trajes chamam a atenção pela extrema simplicidade, ainda mais quando contrastam com o luxo da mansão (Manderley) e com os pertences da falecida Rebecca. A camisola transparente e extremamente provocante de Rebecca, que a diabólica governanta faz questão de mostrar, dá indícios curiosos sobre sua personalidade. Outra peça fundamental do figurino é o vestido que a governanta induz a Sra. De Winter a criar como fantasia. Na hora da festa ao chegar com este traje, causa espanto em todos por ser igual ao usado pela falecida. Além disso, é marcante no início do filme quando o Sr. De Winter, personagem de Laurence Olivier, faz com que sua noiva prometa: “Por favor, prometa-me nunca vestir cetim preto ou pérolas, ou ter trinta e seis anos .”

Ainda nos anos 40, temos “A Sombra de uma dúvida (1943)”, o filme preferido do diretor que traz a mocinha Charlie (Teresa Wright) com a moda específica dos anos de guerra: ombros largos, saia justa e de comprimento diminuto. No mesmo filme temos o tio Charlie, homônimo da sobrinha, e por que não seudoppelgänger? Tio Charlie veste-se sempre impecavelmente como um implacável sedutor de viúvas.

Em “Spellbound (1945)” eu destacaria a colaboração de Salvador Dalí na antológica cena do sonho, o artista teve uma estreita relação com a moda. As mais belas e significativas cenas de surrealismo ligado às vestes foram cortadas deste sonho, onde surgia Ingrid Bergman vestida como estátua grega com uma flecha no pescoço em contraponto com a escultura “A Vênus Restaurada” do fotógrafo e artista Man Ray.

“Sob o Signo de Capricórnio (1949)”, também com Bergman, foi considerado um dos melhores “Hitchcocks” pelos críticos da Cahiers Du Cinema, e aqui é lembrado pela sua excelente caracterização de época, sobretudo dos cavalheiros e da bela e alcoólatra personagem.

Nos anos 50 temos a moda do New Look: amplas saias rodadas e cintura de vespa. Este estilo se originou do polêmico lançamento de Christian Dior durante o Pós-Guerra, e na década de 50 já estava completamente inserido nos guarda-roupas e imaginários das americanas. No filme “Pavor nos Bastidores (1950)”, a diva Marlene Dietrich exigiu Dior para seu figurino e Cole Porter como compositor. Ela chegou a ameaçar Hitchcock: "sem Dior, sem Dietrich!" Uma das cenas mais marcantes do filme é quando ela surge com o vestido branco manchado de sangue e mais tarde um menino lhe mostra uma boneca com o mesmo vestido e a mancha. A culpa e o tormento são então materializados em um Dior maculado.

"Pacto Sinistro (1951)" usa a indumentária para descrever um psicopata bastante excêntrico: Bruno. O personagem usa gravatas absurdas e um prendedor com seu nome bastante inusitado. O filme já começa com close em seu sapato bicolor, ele veste terno listrado impecável e gravata com estampa de lagosta, totalmente surrealista se lembrarmos as relações de Dalí e da estilista Schiaparelli com este crustáceo.

“Disque M para Matar (1954)” foi o primeiro filme de Grace Kelly com Hitchcock. Para o diretor, foi uma grande perda ela se tornar princesa, pois a desejava para diversos outros filmes. Grace cogitou viver “Marnie (1964)” no cinema, mas a corte de Mônaco a proibiu quando soube que seria uma ladra. Dizem que todas as outras loiras escolhidas foram tentativas de Hitchcock para recuperar a imagem e o sentimento que nutria de forma tão reverente em relação a ela, pois considerava Grace uma dessas mulheres que “na sala são senhoras e na cama prostitutas.” Em outro momento explica: “A sutileza do seu sexo atrai-me. Grace transmitia muito mais sexo do que a habitual ‘bomba sexual’. Com Grace, era preciso procurá-lo”.

A evolução da indumentária mais sóbria, conforme a situação da personagem vai se agravando, é bastante evidente em “Disque M para Matar”. No início não há nenhuma sutileza: twin-set branco no café da manhã com o marido e vestido vermelho vivíssimo com o amante. O twin-set é signo de uma típica e devotada esposa da década de 50, já o vestido de festa luxuoso, vermelho e com mangas de renda, remete à traição, sensualidade e à própria lingerie vermelha. Durante o crime, Grace veste uma lânguida camisola, sugerida pela própria atriz nos faz lembrar o que afirmou Truffaut: “Hitchcock filmava cenas de amor como se fossem cenas de crime, e cenas de crime como se fossem cenas de amor.” Após o crime Grace Kelly veste um tailleur cinza escuro e muito sóbrio, “fechando” a personagem e a esmorecendo até o fim.

Em “Janela Indiscreta (1954)” Grace Kelly representa uma socialite muito bem vestida e na última moda. O estilo New Look se faz bastante presente e marcante em seus belos trajes assinados pela figurinista Edith Head. Suas roupas mostram todas as tendências de moda da época: vestidos de festa, jeans casual e a clássica alfaiataria em tailleur verde.

A figurinista Edith Head trabalhou em 11 filmes de Hitchcock, ele confiava muito na moça quando se tratava de esconder os abismos secretos de suas gélidas loiras. “Ladrão de Casaca (1955)” era o filme predileto de Edith entre os do diretor, ela referia-se a este como o sonho de todo o estilista, já que as criações eram luxuosíssimas e bastante significativas, tanto as de Grace Kelly como a roupa negra do ladrão: “o gato”.

A década de 50 foi marcada por grande ostentação e luxo nas vestes, nas festas e no cinema. Nesta época houve um surto de bailes de máscaras esplendorosos, repleto de reis, rainhas, artistas e estilistas renomados. Entre estes bailes, nenhum foi mais fotografado que o do colecionador de arte, multi-milionário-excêntrico Charles de Beisteguis, em seu palácio de Veneza em 1951, tido como a festa do século. Inspirado neste acontecimento, Hitchcock criou o baile final do filme “Ladrão de Casaca”. Neste filme, as cores das vestes de Grace ficam mais intensas ao desenrolar da trama. Destaque para o marcante traje de banho preto e branco e para o vestido emchiffon branco tomara-que-caia, logo todos os magazines da América o copiariam. Nas cenas finais e ápice do filme, Grace usa um suntuoso e inesperado vestido de lamê dourado - é o clímax do filme - nada pode superar aquele vestido.

O filme “Um corpo que cai (1958)”, com Kim Novak, é praticamente uma história de amor gótica entre Scottie (James Stewart) e a Morte. Tudo parece sobrenatural e tanto o figurino como a ambientação foram constituídos neste sentido. Apesar de toda a aura onírica em torno de Madeleine, ela veste roupas elegantíssimas. Hitchcock queria dar às roupas da personagem e a ela própria uma aparência “assustadora”.

Então, Edith Head selecionou um tailleur cinza, dizendo que poderia ser estranho ou inesperado para uma mulher loira se vestir toda em cinza, isso poderia fazer sumir o brilho de uma mulher tão atraente. De fato, todos os elementos a tornam misteriosa e etérea: as vestes, o cabelo loiro platinado e a maquiagem acinzentada, que a deixa pálida e faz parecer menos real. Segundo Kim, ela jamais havia trabalhado com um diretor que exigisse tanto de sapatos e figurino. Quando viu seu tailleur cinza, disse: “Oh meu Deus! Parece que será muito difícil agir dentro dele. É muito confinante(...) (..)Quando provei pela 1ª vez foi mesmo muito pior, era tão restrito”. Depois ela argumentou que não usaria sapatos pretos, e que eles a faziam se sentir puxada para baixo, desconectada e insegura. Hitch achou ótimo: “Madeleine usará, Judy não!” Mais tarde Kim Novak confessou: “Tudo funcionou perfeitamente bem, o tailleur e os sapatos foram uma benção. Eu era constantemente lembrada de que eu não estava sendo eu mesmo, assim como Judy.”

Para finalizar, não poderia deixar de citar “Psicose (1960)”, eu quase deixei passar quando preparava minha apresentação sobre Figurinos em Hitchcock, durante o curso de Carlos Primati em Porto Alegre. Mas, graças ao Napoleão me lembrar que a mente de Norman Bates simula uma “mudança substancial de identidade” no personagem, pensei o quão profunda era a questão de Norman se vestir e “incorporar” sua mãe. Neste momento, o assassino assume uma outra identidade, independente de questões patológicas, ele “torna-se sua mãe” e as roupas e perucas são tão fundamentais, que levam mesmo os espectadores a crerem que a “velha” é a assassina.

Polêmica em torno de uma participante do reality show musical The X Factor, da TV britânica: Chloe Mafia (seu nome artístico) é uma prostituta de 19 anos que já foi presa 140 vezes. O programa é um dos que têm maior audiência nas noites de sábado, chegando a um share de 52%, com 13 milhões de espectadores.

O verdadeiro nome da moça é Chloe Held e ela tem uma filha de dois anos. Num site de prostitutas, ela se apresenta também como Chloe Victoria e apresenta seus preços: 250 libras por uma hora ou 1600 libras pela noite toda. Mas depois que entrou para o reality show, subiu o valor cobrado para 400 a hora e 2400 a noite. No site, ela também se intitula “uma vagabunda inglesa 100% suja”.

Especula-se que ela negocia entrevistas pagas com os tabloides ingleses.

O diretor do X Factor, Simon Cowell, tem sido duramente criticado e respondeu que seu show não é proibido para prostitutas e nenhum tipo de pessoa. “Se uma pessoa se inscreve no X Factor, é claro que ela quer fazer algo melhor de sua vida”, alega.
